"When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then, spontaneosly, the body heals itself."

“Fascia is the organ of form”, this qoute is from the founder of Structural Integration, Ida Rolf, Ph.D. She believed in fascias ability to determine the body’s structure well before this was a commonly held belief. Her theories are truly being solidified with current research going into this substance that permeates the soft tissue of the human form.

For years anatomists just threw much of this important tissue away during dissection, wanting to see what they determined where more important structures in the body. But after a while anatomists started to run out of things to research and fascia remained a substance that hadn’t been given much scientific scrutiny. Within the last decade we have learned more and more about this fascinating tissue. While some of Ida Rolf’s concepts worked well as metaphors, and they still do, we now know more and more about the chemical and mechanical changes that occur in the fascial system.

The wikipedia definition for fascia is very interesting with some great links to new research that is being done to better understand this dynamic and lesser known connective tissue. For more reading check out this link and it’s references:
